Ce l’hai fatta, ce l’abbiamo fatta.

***************************************************************
On May yhr 9th 2017, boys and girls from the School of Fashion and Design of Kidane Mehret Mission in Adwa faced the official exam to get the professional certification of second level in their area. And all of them passed the exam. EVERYONE. This would be a “good” news, of course, apart from the fact that who’s not living here (and, in some cases, even some who’s living here…) is not able to realize the relevance of what happened in the last two years in Adwa that led to this result that is, for this reason, unbelievable.
Why unbelievable?
For example, because in the whole Ethiopia, the average passing rate for this exam is 5-10%. In december, at the exam for Level 1, 95% of the students of the Kidane Mehret Shcool of Fashion passed the exam; and only this would be unbelievable.
For example, because at the second level exam everyone passed. EVEYONE. Counting only on their skills and abilities without any kind of “external help” (you know what I meand…), only studying and woking hard.
For example incredibile because the students who attended the school were starting from on average from a very low level. We are talking about boys and girls starting from 16 up to 25 years of age who, in some cases, did not even know the difference between a centimeter and a meter, were not able to distinguish RIGHT from LEFT or a dress RED from one BLUE (and they do not soffer from daltonism), were not able to drab a basic pattern with a pen, all things are usually learnt at the kindergarten or during the first 2-3 years of primary school. And regardless all this those students are now able to measure your body and create from scratch a skirt, a dress, a shirt, a trousers, perfectly fir for you. I can say because I saw myself!
Unbelievable result because the representatives of the ministry of education (TVET department), Tigray section (where Adwa is), who prepared the exam for the students and checked their knowledge, they could not believe what (for the second time) their eyes saw. They never saw something like this because. Apart from the first level exam, of course.
Unbelievable result becauseall this has been achieved facing many problems. Cultural problems, communication problems. Difficulties (the most insidious) coming even from many internal political problems. Yes. Sad, if we think where this happened. Who brought those results had to go on, often against their own responsibles, and moving on alone but with a clear goal of helping those people to get a chance for their life.
Results have been achieved, for sure over achieved. Not only everyone passed the exam (and now they have a piece of paper), more than important in Ethiopia, but also those students in some cases already have a work contract signed, ready for them. Those students have a future now. And they learnt that they can make it without help from anyone else apart from their own strenght. In additon to that one of the best students has been prepared to be a teacher and go gon with the school. She only need to pass Level 3 exam (Level 1 and 2 has been passed easily one year ago) and in september, when the school goes on, she can teach Level 1 and Level 2 for new students.
When those things happens usually everyone want’s to be on the Winning Team.
The credit for all this must be given for sure to whom provided budget and infrastructure to start the Fashion School. Which is not for free, to be honest, students pay a fee, even high fee compared to their possibilities, but only this is not enough. So a big thanks must be given to whom facilitated all this, to whom donated and to whom spent this budget to start the school, this is fair.
But some of those students, even if the budget and the infrastructure were ready to be used, even if the sewing machines were in the stores not used, would have been waiting again for years in the mission, working in the Sewing Workshop sewing buttons for years, as it happened in some cases, waiting for someone to start the Fashion School that someone else promised to them.
Thanks to the hard work, stubborness and faith in what you do of a special person, thanks God, for the people who belive in God, all this did not happen, those students must not wait anymore. This must be clear.
This person is called LAURA DIAZ RIVERA.
And I’m proud to say that she’s my girfriend.
You made it, we made it.
Sei grande Laurita.
